Quick Road Trips from NYC

Looking for ways to maximize your weekends and or summer days? Day trip might be the answer. For some people a 4 hour drive is ideal for a day trip. For others that 4 hours might include both ways. Either way, consider taking day trips as a way of getting away more often and probably for much less money than booking a weekend or even longer trip. Here are 3 day trips to consider from NYC.

Philadelphia, PA

At just under a 2 hour drive, Philadelphia definitely fits the bill for a day trip. There is a lot to take in in this city. For history buffs you can't miss the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and Constitution Square. For movie buffs there is always a quick workout ending with a photo opp by running the stairs at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Yes, those are the famous stairs from the Rocky movie. Traveling with kids? One of the best museums this part of the East is the Please Touch Museum. Philadelphia is home to several museums focused on art, history and interactive fun for children.

And then there is the food. Well let's get straight to it, the cheesesteak. You can find classic Philadelphia cheesesteak all around the city but you might just want to do the comparison tasting to decide the winner between Geno's or Pat's. Both have loyal fans. You can work of all this delicious food by ending your day trip walking along Boathouse Row which lines the river with boathouses from the 19-century. If there is time, consider a visit to Reading Terminal farmers' market or a tour to Amish Country.

Washington, DC

A drive to Washington, DC is a great day trip from New York City. You can plan several day trips here focusing on just one thing. You could spend an entire day and still need to come back to checkout the museums of the Smithsonian and other museums nearby. The National Zoo will of course be a big draw for kids so it might be the only one you get to.

Washington, DC while a major city is also home to several beautiful parks. Spend the day walking trails, plan a picnic with local DC fare (mumbo sauce is one thing to look out for), or just relax after a long day of walking around the main attractions and monuments. DC is a 4 hour drive from NYC so plan to take the drive early going down and grab some rest before you head back home the same day.

Providence, Rhode Island

Providence, Road Island is a three hour drive from NYC. The first thing about this trip is the picturesque drive itself. Mountain views, valleys, oceanside drives, and more make this a drive worthy of a view stops. Providence itself is a small city. Definitely check out the Providence's Little Italy for your favorite Italian fare. Think New York City's Little Italy but with less crowds.

Starting in Providence, you could actually take in a lot around the state of Rhode Island. Some of the fun would include boat tours that focus on history, architecture, and famous sites around the Providence. You are definitely close to water so checkout the seafood scene. And if there is time, take a quick trip over to the famous Martha's vineyard.
